Bio From AllMusic.Com
That first EP, Creepin' On Ah Come Up, ended up surpassing everyone's expectations, peaking' at number 12 on the Billboard charts and scoring two enormous hits, "Thuggish Ruggish Bone" and "For the Love of Money"; the former song went on to become a major anthem, while the latter featured Eazy-E on guest vocals. As a further testament to the public interest for Bone, when their debut LP, E. 1999 Eternal, hit the streets a year later in mid-1995, it debuted at number one, proving that the group was more than a mere novelty. Initially driven by the lingering success of Creepin' On Ah Come Up and the first two singles from E. 1999 Eternal, "1st of tha Month" and "East 1999," the album was then catapulted to multi-platinum success thanks to the amazing success of "Tha Crossroads," a heartfelt, radio-friendly remix of "Crossroads" from the album; the single was actually so popular that it tied the Beatles' 32-year-old record for the fastest-rising single and remained at the number one spot for eight weeks before eventually winning the group the 1996 Grammy for best rap performance.
In the time leading up the long-awaited release of the double-album The Art Of War in August 1997 (which found the group without Flesh-N-Bone), Bone broadened their reach, putting out an album as Mo Thugs Family featuring a roster of the group's peers. While the Mo Thugs Family album didn't do that well and neither did Flesh-N-Bone's solo album, T.H.U.G.S., The Art Of War was met with mixed feeling by both fans and critics. Fans were happy to have two CDs worth of music to listen to but many were disappointed when the album didn't quite measure up to E. 1999 Eternal; similarly, critics found the album quite diluted in terms of quality, with many agreeing that it would have been a stronger album had it been trimmed down to a single-disc album. Despite the mixed views, the album did score two hits, "Look Into My Eyes," which peaked at number four on both the pop and R&B charts, and "If I Could Teach the World," a "Tha Crossroads"-like song that didn't get the radio play it need to become a big hit.
Following the disappointment of The Art Of War relative to E. 1999 Eternal, the Bone Thugs took a break, releasing solo albums — Bizzy Bone's Heaven'z Movie (1998), Krayzie Bone's Thug Mentality 1999 (1999), Flesh-N-Bone's 5th Dog Lets Loose (2000) — two more Layzie Bone-executive produced Mo Thugs Family albums — Chapter II: Family Reunion (1998), Mo Thugs III: The Mothership (2000) — and a best-of album: The Collection Volume One (1998). Even with all of these albums making their way into the market, none of the Bone Thugs or any of their Mo Thugs affiliates seemed capable of scoring a hit song or a popular album. So with waning public interest and increasing negative critical response, the Bone Thugs regrouped for what many saw as their comeback album, BNTHResurrection. Released in early 2000, the album didn't score any major hits but did quiet cynics, proving that the group could still piece together a quality album, even if it still couldn't compare to E. 1999 Eternal. Then at the tail end of 2000, The Collection Volume Two appeared in record stores; unlike the first volume, this collection functioned more as a rarities collection than a best-of collection. A second round of solo albums sold even more poorly, and Bone became somewhat of a has-been. Occasional reunions such as BNTHResurrection (2000) and Thug World Order (2002) produced moments of glory, but these were brief and few and far between. In 2005 the band reunited again minus Bizzy Bone. In September of that year the Internet-only release Bone 4 Life appeared. Then in 2006, it was announced that Bone had signed to Swizz Beatz's Full Surface Records, which was distributed by Interscope. Their first album for the label, Strength & Loyalty, appeared in the spring of 2007 with guest spots from the Game, Mariah Carey, Akon, Bow Wow, and Twista. — Jason Birchmeier

If it seemed the black sheep of Bone was becoming more personal and approachable, 2004's fascinating and cryptic Alpha And Omega was a puzzling move, but fans responded positively to the album, influencing Bizzy to produce his own underground limited-edition album, The Beginning & The End. In 2005 he made news with a drunken appearance on Houston's KPFT radio, where he claimed to be homeless. He made no excuses for his appearance in the many interviews that would follow, and while he admitted he wasn't actually homeless, he did admit to having a drinking problem and that he was working on controlling it. With Bizzy showing no signs of slowing down, the perfectly titled Speaking In Tongues appeared that year along with two mail order-only releases — For the Fans, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 — and a reunion album with Bone member Layzie Bone titled Bone Brothers. Bizzy's refusal to tour in support of Bone Brothers found him out of favor with the group once again, and the full Bone reunion that had been talked about fell apart. Bizzy moved ahead and made 2006 even busier with the albums Thugs Revenge, The Story, and The Midwest Cowboy all landing that year. A second volume of Bone Brothers arrived in 2007. - David Jeffries

When Bone Thugs-N-Harmony first exploded on the rap scene in 1994 with their fast rhymes, harmonious choruses, ominous G-funk, and gangsta attitude, no one knew whether the uncanny Cleveland group were for real or if they were a novelty success. After all, at this point in time, few rap groups outside of New York or California had been able to prove themselves on a commercial level. And Bone Thugs-N-Harmony leap-frogged cult success, instantly rising to the top of the charts with their summer anthem "Thuggish Ruggish Bone." By the time their first full-length album, E. 1999 Eternal, dropped a year later, it not only debuted at number one but also proved to be one of the decades most important and enduring albums. While other rap groups struggled to break away from the cliches first forged by N.W.A., Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, 2 Live Crew, and L.L. Cool J in the late '80s, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were one of the few groups able to carve out their own stylistic niche, an inimitable myriad of urban sounds with a strong ghetto attitude. Yet following the unprecedented success of E. 1999 Eternal and, more so, the Grammy-winning success of "Tha Crossroads," Bone struggled to meet unreasonable expectations and also struggled with redundancy, having realized their apparent summit on their debut album. Yet even if the group was unable to repeat their success, they remained a vital group as few were able to bite on their signature style.
Conceived in the post-industrial Midwestern ghettos of Cleveland, OH, the Bone Thugs — Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone, Flesh-N-Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone — didn't have good probability of ever being a successful rap group. Until N.W.A. put Los Angeles on the rap map in the late '80s, almost all commercially successful rap had come out of New York. By the early '90s when Bone were doing their best to get a label deal, rap was dominated by the East and West coast, leaving the five rappers without any contacts or chance of getting a deal in the Midwest. In 1993, though, the group took a chance and took a bus ride from Cleveland to Los Angeles to meet with Eazy-E's record label, Ruthless Records. When they returned to Cleveland, they had a deal; plans were in place to release a debut EP to test the market for interest in a non-coastal rap group.
Before they were known as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, the Cleveland rappers were known as B.O.N.E. Enterprise. Though the group had little to no success under this moniker, besides their unlikely encounter with Eazy-E (who signed them to his label), they did produce a recording as B.O.N.E. Enterprise, Faces of Death, that saw a re-release in 1995 by Stoney Burke in hopes of capitalizing on the group's sudden success as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. — Jason Birchmeier
A member of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, rapper Krayzie Bone was born Anthony Henderson in Cleveland, OH; also known as Leatherface, the Sawed-Off Gangsta, he joined Bone Thugs in 1993, debuting a year later with the EP Creepin' On Ah Come Up. Subsequent LPs, including 1995's E. 1999 Eternal and 1997's The Art Of War, launched the group to rap superstardom, and as the decade drew to its close Krayzie Bone issued his solo debut, Thug Mentality 1999. Inner demons and life on the street were the main topics of 2001's Thug On Da Line. The follow-up, Gemini: Good vs. Evil, was originally slated for a 2004 release but was delayed till early 2005 when Krayzie got to the oppurtunity to record some tracks for the album with his old crew members Wish Bone and Bizzy Bone. - Jason Ankeny
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony member Wish Bone remained relatively quiet and inactive following the group's mid-'90s sudden rise to fame as his colleagues — Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Flesh-N-Bone, and Bizzy Bone — all pursued either solo albums or worked with the Mo Thugs Family albums. - Jason Birchmeier
Undoubtedly the most troubled member of the volatile Cleveland rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Flesh-N-Bone struggled to release some spotty solo albums amid a series of legal problems. The brother of Layzie Bone — the group's guiding force — Flesh experienced instant celebrity status alongside his fellow Bone Thugs with the success of 1994's Creepin' On Ah Come Up and 1995's E. 1999 Eternal. The multi-platinum success of these albums and the resulting Grammy provided Flesh with the opportunity to record his debut solo album, T.H.U.G.S.: Trues Humbly United Gatherin' Souls, on the mammoth rap label Def Jam; unfortunately, the album didn't live up to expectations, selling poorly and receiving less than favorable reviews. Then in July 1997, around the time Bone Thugs-N-Harmony — minus Flesh — released their double album, Art Of War, he was charged with assault and battery as well as with possession of an explosive after police raided his home, finding a stolen gun and explosives; Flesh also went into drug rehab in Los Angeles. A year later he served some time in jail for the previous year's probation violations. Though there was plenty of talk about Flesh-N-Bone's sophomore album (tentatively titled Book of Thugs) in mid-1998, the album didn't appear on shelves until October 2000 with a new title, 5th Dog Let Loose, and a new label, Koch. In September, weeks before the release of his album, Flesh was sentenced to ten years in jail for threatening a friend with an AK-47 in December 1999, his latest run-in with authorities. - Jason Birchmeier
A member of the Cleveland gangsta rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and brother to onetime group member Flesh-N-Bone, Layzie Bone remained relatively quiet in the wake of the group's mid-'90s breakthrough success. While fellow Bone Thugs Flesh-N-Bone, Bizzy Bone, and Krayzie Bone all recorded solo albums, Layzie presented the Mo Thugs Family, a wide and revolving roster of Cleveland-area urban groups featured on the multiple Mo Thugs Family albums. His solo debut, It's Not A Game, finally appeared in 2005. A year later he released Thug Brothers, a collaborative effort with Young Noble from the Outlawz, along with the solo effort The New Revolution. - Jason Birchmeier
Best known as a member of the Cleveland crew Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, rapper Bizzy Bone began a prolific, risk-taking, and sometimes baffling solo career in 1998. Combining rapid raps and laid-back singing, his soul-searching debut, Heaven'z Movie, didn't sound entirely unlike a Bone Thugs album, but it was obvious that on his own Bizzy felt free to explore his psyche and to go eccentric places his group just would not. The Gift from 2001 further divided Bone fans, with some seeing his confessional writing as riveting while others found it overly indulgent. A year later at a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony performance in New York City, Bizzy was noticeably drunk and walked off-stage halfway through the show. He was let go from the group that night, but Bizzy claimed he had been a solo artist for years and only a guest in the group. He also began giving more interviews around this time, frequently speaking about his new crew, the 7th Sign. He also made an appearance on the Fox television series America's Most Wanted, revealing he had been kidnapped at the age of four and had wrongly believed his mother was dead until he was rescued, thanks to someone who had recognized his picture from a photo shown at the end of the 1983 television movie Adam.
The producer behind the success of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, DJ U-Neek earned a Grammy for his work on the group's smash hit "The Crossroads." He released the solo album Ghetto Street Pharmacist in the fall of 1999. - Jason Ankeny
