The Florida-based political rap duo Dead Prez consists of Stic.man and M-1, a pair of rappers inspired by revolutionaries from Malcom X to Public Enemy. They immersed themselves in political and social studies as they forged their own style of hip-hop, which debuted on the Loud '97 Set Up tape "Food, Clothes and Shelter." They went on to work with Big Punisher on his 1998 album Capital Punishment and released singles like 1998's "Police State With Chairman Omali" and 1999's "It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop." Their debut album, Lets Get Free, followed in early 2000. A two-volume mixtape project — Turn off the Radio: The Mixtape, Vol. 1 and Turn Off The Radio The Mixtape Vol. 2: Get Free Or Die Tryin' — followed in 2002 and 2003, boasting tracks and new productions, and their proper studio follow-up, RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta, appeared in 2004. Two years later the group collaborated with the three remaining members of the Outlawz for Can't Sell Dope Forever, followed shortly after by Soldier 2 Soldier, a joint record between Stic.man and Young Noble. - Heather Phares
The one-time president for the New York City branch of the radical black nationalist National People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, M-1 caused some controversy in the underground rap scene as a part of the critically acclaimed and ostensibly socialist Dead Prez twosome. While he and Stic.man were in between labels, each ventured out with his own solo project. M-1 was inspired to put together a solo album in part by doing production work for other artists, including Mississippi rapper David Banner, but also from collaborating with Italian jazz guitarist Fabrizio Sotti (who produced most of jazz diva Cassandra Wilson's 2003 Glamoured album). In March 2006, M-1 released the Confidential LP as a CD/DVD combination, with contributions from Ghostface Killah, Q-Tip, and Cassandra Wilson herself. The first single, "'Til We Get There," did fall below the radar of mainstream airplay, but not before the album reached the number 23 spot on the independent chart and 52 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. - Cyril Cordor
One-half of the revolutionary rap duo Dead Prez, Stic.man does it all: rapping, producing, publishing books, and practicing the martial arts. Besides the critically heralded albums he's recorded as a member of Dead Prez, the Florida native released two books -- The Art of Emcee-ing and Warrior Names from Afrika -- in 2005 and collaborated with the Outlawz's Young Noble on the 2006 effort Soldier 2 Soldier. A year later he released his debut solo album, Manhood. Stic.man also founded the politically charged magazine Ammo and runs the Atlanta-based Boss Up Inc., which sells music, clothing, and books that advocate both social activism and a vegetarian lifestyle. - David Jeffries
